Harm Reduction

Harm Reduction is a non-judgmental, non-coercive, trauma- informed, client-centered extension of public health that aims to reach those impacted by substance use, who are often left out of clinical settings. We believe people can and will make positive decisions about their health when given options that meet their needs and circumstances.

We believe in and respect the rights of people who use drugs. We aim to seek the practical needs of our clients and lower their overall health risk  while supporting autonomy, responsibility, community, and compassion. Harm reduction prioritizes quality of life over placing judgment on an individual’s behavior.

Harm reduction tools and interventions provided through Housing Works Healthcare include the following:

  • Syringe exchange: Sterile syringes are one of the best ways to prevent the spread of HIV and Hep C. Housing Works Community Healthcare provides access and guidance in proper syringe use, safety kits, and counseling for those at high risk of disease transmission.
  • Naloxone training: Having access to and using Naloxone (also known by the brand name Narcan) greatly increases the chances of someone surviving an accidental opioid overdose. Contact us to learn how to save someone's life by recognizing the risks and signs of an overdose, and how to respond.
  • Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT): We offer medications as interventions to individuals who engage in substance use who wish to better manage their use.

Outpatient Drug Treatment

Everyone’s recovery journey is different. In partnership with the NY State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), our program is designed to meet you where you are. Services include individual and group counseling, referrals to case management, and mental health and medication-assisted treatment. We can also help family members or other caregivers who may need support for themselves. We provide services in person and via telehealth, and walk-ins are accepted.

Call 718-277-0386 and start your journey today. We are here to help.
